About the “People List” #

Not just a dry list of names, we’ve “added value” by showing how each person is connected to the case, who they work for, even how to find them if they are on social media. In this new version of the wiki, there are also separate pages for each person, where you’ll find job titles, whether they were interviewed by police, or spoke to Serial or other media, links to employer pages, and plenty more, have a look.

Some of the information shown is particular to the time period when that person was involved in the case, and only shown if relevant. In other words, if someone’s employer is listed as Baltimore City Police Department, that’s likely true for 1999 several decades ago, they may have moved on. A couple of people have had multiple employers where that work connects them to the case, in which case only the most recent one is listed here, just click through and you’ll see the others. That also means our list shows a lot of “forever young” high school students who might even have high school kids of their own now.

Social media and other personal website links are only shown where relevant, or if people have engaged publicly with the case since Serial. The main podcasts have their own twitter accounts @serial and @undisclosedpod, even this wiki has one @undisclosedwiki.

Nicknames, misspellings and searching #

A word about searching for people using this wiki, beware, there are a LOT of misspellings in the source documents, plus OCR can be a bit unreliable on older scanned files. It pays to be a bit flexible or creative with your search terms. A few common misspellings, and nicknames, are included below as a starting point, but the search within the wiki isn’t as smart as we’d like, especially inside the documents. Even if you are very smart, the version you remember might not be the actual one.

For example all these mispellings and alternatives are all found in the paperwork: Vicky Wash, ASA V. Wash, Vickie L. Wash (the correct version), Vicki Wash, and even sometimes Vickie WALSH.

Privacy #

Serial’s phenomenal success and the interest it sparked in Adnan and Hae’s case has made a lot of information publicly available on the internet about many of the people connected to this case. We’ve tried to be sensitive to the impact that might have and, within the main text of the wiki, we’ve avoided using people’s full names. For people who appeared in The Case Against Adnan Syed, we included their full name as an Alternative Name. Pages are named using these rules:

  • Teachers – “Mr/Ms/Coach First initial Last name”
  • Those who were students or minors at the time, relatives whose full name would in turn identify those minors, others who have largely remained anonymous – “First name Last initial”
  • People who have willingly spoken to the media or in court since Serial made this into a high profile case – “First name Last name”
  • Public figures, law enforcement, lawyers, others in jobs that regularly involve them in criminal investigations – “First name Last name”

New and improved People List! #

In this new version of the wiki we’ve made it easier to find the person you are looking for, text search includes descriptions, employers, schools, nicknames and common typos, plus sorting and filters. Also, each person now has their own page with extra info plus links to relevant wiki pages and significant documents like transcripts of their trial testimony.

You can search for just a few letters, including names, nicknames, common misspellings, the description text or groupings.
